Historic Dorking
Escape to Dorking for the day. Visit this attractive market town to enjoy its beautiful setting, panoramic views, and historic streets where markets have flourished since medieval times.
You might like to explore the town with our ‘Heritage Trail’, and the nearby countryside with the ‘Walks in the Greensand Hills’ leaflet. Both are available from The Visitor Information Centre at The Dorking Halls.
The Heritage Trail outlines two alternatives. Trail 1 passes the house where Sir Laurence Olivier was born, explores Cotmandene, which was the site of annual fairs and cricket matches, and follows the path along the shady banks of the Pippbrook stream. Trail 2 takes you around the historic centre of the town, along West Street - renowned for its antique shops, and past the former home of Pilgrim Father William Mullins.
After lunch in the town you could contrast the bustle of the High Street with the peace and tranquillity of the countryside on its outskirts. A short walk will take you to the wooded hills of The Nower, which was once part of a large country estate. Enjoy a stroll through the glorious woods to one of the viewpoints where you can admire the breathtaking views.
You could complete this relaxing day with a meal at one of the town’s fine restaurants or a show at The Dorking Halls.
You might also like to visit the Museum and the Dorking Caves, or take a guided walk of the town.
