Leatherhead
Directly north of Dorking, at the opposite end of the Mole Gap, lies the historic town of Leatherhead. Although noted in the past for its leather-working, the name has medieval origins which when translated refer to the town's position as a fording place across the River Mole. Leatherhead is therefore a crossroads town where rail, road and river meet.
The parish of Leatherhead lies mainly on the east bank of the River Mole. Within the town are some important historic houses, often with access to the river which is at its most beautiful and interesting as it passes through Leatherhead. A pattern of islands provides a habitat for many birds, butterflies and wildflowers.
A short distance from the river is the town centre, an attractive mix of high street names and independent traders. For visitors there is the town museum in the historic Hampton Cottage and the ancient church of St Mary and St Nicholas. The town also boasts several fine inns, cafes and restaurants.
