Polesden Lacey
Given to the National Trust in 1942 by the Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville, daughter of William McEwan, founder of the McEwans brewery. The 1,400 acre estate includes two farms, the Regency villa, formal grounds, plus woodland and Ranmore Common to the south.
Polesden Lacey commands some of the finest views in Surrey and the grounds and garden are open every day of the year. Four Landscape Walks, varying in length from one to three miles, lead you through farm and woodland to reveal stunning scenery and views. They start at the south west corner of the visitor car park where you can pick up a leaflet.
There are 30 acres of formal garden to enjoy. The walled garden includes a large rose garden, iris beds, lavender garden and winter displays. The sunken garden is a little-known area of Polesden Lacey that includes a rock garden, so fashionable in Edwardian Britain. The steps lead to the croquet lawn and onwards over the thatched bridge to the former kitchen garden - now a haven for insects and wildflowers.
The house is open daily March to October except Mondays and Tuesdays, 11.00am to 5.00pm. This beautiful country house was completed in 1842 and contains Mrs Greville's exceptional collection of furniture, paints and porcelain. Come and enjoy this luxurious interior, renowned for its ambience created by this well-known Edwardian society hostess. From time to time, two 1920s gramophones provide authentic music of the period for visitors to enjoy.
A shop and plant sales, together with a tearoom can be found in the stable yard.
