Walking
Dorking and its countryside are best discovered on foot!
This part of the Surrey Hills has been carved by nature into one of the most diverse, scenic and tranquil landscapes in Surrey. A landscape of gently rolling countryside cloaked in the green of woodland and grassy glades and bounded by dramatic scarps with equally dramatic views. A myriad of paths and trails will lead you to stunning views over the Weald to the South Downs or possibly to a grand country house surrounded by peaceful parkland far removed from the hustle and bustle of London.
The North Downs and Greensand Ways, The Mole Gap Trail and the Thames Link are all as diverse as the countryside through which they pass but whichever walk you decide to take you can be assured that you will be surrounded by history and heritage. Jane Austen, Horatio Nelson (plus Lady Hamilton!) and Vaughan Williams have all walked within this landscape, drawing inspiration from it . You never know what it might inspire in you!
There are two excellent ordnance survey maps covering the area which are widely available in bookshops: the 1:50,000 Landranger 187 'Dorking, Reigate and Crawley' and Explorer 146 'Dorking' Box Hill and Reigate' which at 1:25,000 is very a good guide to footpaths. There are excellent books and guides for the area - see Essential Information - Books and Guides.
